Alligator territory

No, not a Gator! But we thought is was since we now are getting further south, to Alligator territory! Lars simply refusis to take a swim from now on!!!!!!

The climate is great! The autumn has come and the colors change slowly but surely from green to yellow, brown and red, but what's amazing is that the nights are getting really cool with down to 8 degrees C, the mornings are beautiful, pure magic, and the fairies (the morning fog) are dancing like crazy. Then the temperature rises with the sun and ends in the afternoon that we are sitting on the flybridge in the thinnest clothes we have in 26-28 degrees!

We have just visited Aberdeen and once again confirmed that if you continue to eradicate the city center, in favor of shopping centers outside the cities, the center will be lost. The well off´s live in villas outside the towns and want comfortable "one stop shopping" in the big malls. As a consequence, the center will be empty, the companies move out, the poor move in and the decay of historic buildnings and strucures begins. Slowly but surely, like amen in the church, the city centers will die! "And Sweden is always doing what the Americans are doing! Do we like it? I do not!

Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterways is a huge project completed in 1984, after 12 years of construction, with 11 locks and close to 400km long; from central US down to the Gulf of Mexico. It's a bigger "undertaking" than the Panama Canal we have heard!!

The high mountains and hilly scenery of Tennessee and Smoky Mountans are replaced by forests, low-lying scenery, a bit like woodland. There is hardly any settlements, and the river winds south and is sometimes interrupted by long narrow buried canals and sometimes lakes.

We are alone in the world, sometimes we see trawlers like us, but we just wave each other and go each to their own. We usually anchor and enjoy evening skinny dip and barbecue but at 1800 the sun goes down and 30min later it is black around us. Total darkness! That´s the way it´s going to be a couple of weeks, before we reach the salty sea and more civilization. For better or worse :)

Chattanooga to Florence - 250 miles from east to west along The Tennessee River!

After Chattanooga with Smokey Mountains, the boat trip went downstream on the Tennessee River with stops for anchorping and visits in small towns / villages. Last stop, final station, Florence. We were looking for "down town" to elaborate in small shops .... there was a central street with older fine southern houses but there were no people and barely any shops :( Shopping is done outside the towns - in boring malls! Food stores? No, not at walking distance! The car is the only way to get some milk and eggs. Of course Sweden has to copy without reflection! Without thinking about the consequences for the community and for the people...

How nice are they, The Americans! Everywhere they are fascinated by what we do there, in their small town. What a cute accent ... everyone says and they directly hear that we are from Germany ... almost right, we say w it's a sweet smile. They help us find where to eat, where all the museums are and which nice old enchanting houses we just have to see. The even follow us and show the way ..... !! Sometimes it's hard to leave, a few times with the excuse that "my husband is waiting for us" and with an apologetic watch the clock;)

Well, the times has come for our guests to leave and we will continue south towards the Gulf Coast, 450 miles and 11 locks to go that will take us 370 feet down to sea level. Exiting!

Lazy days on the river

Tennessee River, Decatur, Alabama, 12okt 2017
In English below

A jump from Goat Island.... NO, not for us :)

Silent and lazy days on the river. From having thanked our creator for the AC it's now drier and just around 23 degrees (C) and sunny. It's really nice! Yesterday we stayed tucked behind Goat Island where a farmer had had his goats before World War II. Beautiful and nice to really swim.

In the small town of Scottboro there was a world sensation; Unclaimed Baggage Center where several airlines sold the luggage contents (as well as the bags) that passengers did not pick up, at very good prices! Big as everything in the United States and we bought some nice stuff, including a suitcase for the trip home to Christmas. As usual, everyone is very service minded and the staff at the marina restaurant drove us there and picked us up a few hours later! Wow!

Lots of Herons crossed our way today and we made one lock.

The girls enjoying the view

..as well as breakfast, and lunch, and dinner, and snacks, and a bier, and a glass of wine.... 👍

Tennessee sightseeing

After a few days in Chattanooga and Smokey Mountains, our river tour commenced :)

A violent autumn storm in Northern Europe caused Elsie and Britt-Marie to miss the flight from Amsterdam to Atlanta! But after an night in a hotel in Amsterdam airport they hit the road again, made a new try and late in the afternoon after they landed in Chattanooga :)

Hurricane Nate (who apparently also wanted to cuddle with the girls) was heading our way and would "mess up" Chattanooga a bit. It meant slightly changed plans and we decided to "make" the Smokey Mountains as quickly as possible. We had a whole day with the MC people and wonderful views of the Appalachians.

When we tired and hungry came back to Chattanooga, there was a music party in the marina and we were invited :) Food, wine, live country & western music. GREAT! When we went to Ambika there was a music festival in town, right next to the boat. What a trip we have!

Nate arrived on Saturday, he was dying but had saved a lot of rain that he poured over us. The water level was raised a bit too much to feel convenient, and eventually we had to move Ambika to a floating dock .... Instead of sulking in the boat, we did a full day in the nice Tennessee Aquarium that was really first class, see pictures below. One building contained wildlife in the rivers and the other was about the life in salty oceans.

Well, now we are heading west and wie´ll be River Hikers for a few days, it will be fun!

PS Here in Chattanooga, The Trail of Tears begins where the Americans forced the Indians to move to a designated Indian Territory west of Mississippi. Some say it was due to that they found gold and the Gold Rush began. Mainly the Cherokee Indians was forced away but also other tribes, free slaves and mixed race people .... In the years 1838-1850 they were forced to leave their settlements and "with the help" of the military, wander all the way under difficult conditions. Approximately 2,000-6,000 of the 16,543 relocated Cherokee perished along the way

We needed gas and coffee and ended up in this place - that God must have forgotten :)
No coffee (they did only one pot and today's pot was finished) but we got gas and could continue.....

We are on  vacation! After many days sailing and exploring the surroundings with Eagle Harts crew, our roads have parted. They headed south to Mobile to leave the boat and go back to British Columbia in Canada for a few months and we, as we said, have vacation :)

We anchored in a lake north of Chattanooga and just enjoy silence, sun, swimming, and yesterday, a walk in the nearby State Park with a trail of 4,5 miles, it was nice (and necessary) to get a little exercise....

Ambika at anchor in Chickamauga Lake

We took the dingy to explore the surrounding. Lars thinks I row extremely fast!

She really tries to look like a branch or an old tree. She was totally motionless when we passed.

This little turtle must think we look awfully strange....  you can see it in her eyes :)

We saw one (1) flower and this is it...

"Smokeys" in the sunset :)

We had a full day with our new friends, Susan and John on Eagle Heart. We rented a car to watch the Appalachians and Smokey Mountans .... and buy boots of course!

Today, "just" is 25 degrees, a trip to the supermarket is on the agenda and tonight live country music at the bar at the marina. It's the last night with Susan and John before our roads part; they go the south and we go out for a few days on anchor awaiting our Swedish guests that's coming next week :)

Lars with two sheilas on the top of the mountain

..with a magic view!

Well, we have the confidence - only the boots are lacking :) But not for long!

Maybe boots with flowers, flowers and more flowers..... or not!

I fell for theese and Susan bought white boots full of hearts :)

Yesterdays biking on The Tail of Dragon and beyond, was fantastic, the boys thought!

Boys will always be boys! Ett av USA's berömdaste (häftigaste) motorcykelväg finns här; The Tail of the Dragon!

Boys will be boys! Time to be young, adventurous and free as the bird again! Feel the wind and enjoy the fragrances of nature, be in one with the Machine (hmmm). Lars and John have rented motorcycles, HD I think, to make Smoky Mountain unsafe today! One of America's most famous (coolest) motorcycle roads is here; The Tail of the Dragon! I'm glad he bought at back protection for one can not rent them... Here's the guys (usually men 60+) race in shorts and T-shirts and many do not even have a helmet 😱

Susan and I will enjoy Retail Therapy in Spendid Isolation from the guys :)

Hopefully they will take nice pictures! It's not yet true autumn, so the colors are greener than the picture above, but beautiful, definitely!

This WILL NOT happen to our boys! Their bikes will not be here!!! And they will both come back in one piece (two pieces actually)!

Winding wilderness, heat & humidity

Hobbs Island, Alabama, 22sep 2017

Anchoring in creeks is really nice.

We can not get used to heat! But we don't get used to the cold either... The modern mans's comfort zone is very small .... :) In any case, it is very hot and we give a grateful thought to the one who put AC in the boat!

Now we are deep into the Tennessee River with deep locks, winding rivers and anchorage in creeks and in bays. But yesterday we had a dull lake to pass with heavy industry. Yes, it's called civilization,

But now it's time is to enjoy the greenery that flanks the river and has not yet given way to autumn. Today, we begin to discover mountains at a distance and for hours on we only see wilderness.

Ok, it's getting really hard to understand what they say on their thick, fast and gritty Southern dialect. Today, we heard two barges who talked to each other - without understanding a word of what they said :) The fun part  is that they do not understand what we say either! Fun and fun ....

We believe we are true "Lock Stars" because we have come through most locks without long waiting time. Many, further north of us, have been waiting for several days due to lock repairs, etc. .... There are four deep locks in Tennessee river up to Chatanooga!

The rivers can get quite rough and overflowing seems to be happening from time to time.....

Never mind the view, there is fishinto be done!

Wheeler lock is deep, 72 feet. The next will be 94! EagleHart is locking beside us.

The new Lockmaster "Mr Blue Heron" keeps a sharp eye at the lock...

...and makes sure everybody get out and away :)

A deer swimming over the river.. poor thing, he turned back when he heard us comming!

No Sandy, no elephants yet!
Dale and Sandy didn't believe their eyes when they did this trip year 2000 and saw en elephant drinking water in the river 😱
Yes, it eventually turn out to be a circus nearby :)

Finally the sun gives away for some cooler air And we can have a beer or two.....

..and maybe a swim in the creek (better hold on because the current is strong at times)

Tennessee River 🕷🕷🕷

Clifton, Tennessee, 18sep 2017

A barge meeting on Tennessee River

We are soon running out of superlatives! It is so beautiful to travel in all silence, slowly passing in the crooked river, where the sides are lined with rolling greenery, paved sandy beaches and small islands and sometimes tall, lined cliffs. We are lucky with the weather; It's almost too hot, very humid and the river is glossy like a mirror. We meet a few barges that slowly headed north and at night we anchor behind islands or in bays that give us protection for barges. We are swimming in the river after anchoring and just enjoying the coolness... We are partying with Canadian couple Susan and John at Eagle Hart and have just taught them "Asshole" :)

The Great Spider War has reached a new strategic level; chemical warfare! We have tried everything else so far without success. We can say that they will otherwise win and completely take over Ambika 😱. Now we have loaded up with chemicals and it will be a bloody battle tomorrow!

Game...

Morning mist - beautiful!

Bald Headed Eagle on the Cumberland River, wow!

I want to live here! "After a day in Grand Rivers waiting for "Irma" to pass (which just gave us a bit of rain here in the north), we decided to rent a car together with John and Susan at Eagle Eagle and go and do Nashville for a couple of days. From Grand River, it was 2 hours drive to this CountryandWestern's mecka! It was raining all the time, but who cares when embraced by this amazing city! My expectations were on a medium level - but jeeez what a lovely city! The joy was so noticeable, you could feel it everywhere, and music streamed from every waterhole on Broadway, amazing! Oh, what I wish I could sing or at least play some little instrument !! We had to be content to buy a speaker and download music on Spotfiy so that we can get back the feeling from Nashville .... We tried to find fancy boots but bought a cowboy hat instead :)

The last night we went to the music hall "The Grand ole Opry" where, amongst other artists, Luke Bryan was on stage. The feeling when the full arena (4000 people) sang and applauded standing up was simply GREAT! Luke is probably the new Bruce Springsteen (my opionion)! And is he good looking or is he good looking!!

PS Dale and Sandy were hit by Hurricane Irma. Their properties in Key Largo were flooded, but not as bad as they feared, and the houses in Crystal River were not flooded as by a wonder! But poor all those who were badly affected!!

Kentucky stile dinner

Grand Rivers, KY, 11sep 2017

The staff bid us welcome and they fetched us in their curtisy car from the marina to the small town of Grand River, to the state famous restaurant "Pattis", with Amish roots. Great!

Boaters booked a table in the dry restaurant in the dry state of Kentycky (but wet county). We had to go to to the food store to get beer and bring it (under the table) to the restaurant...

Decorations everywhere! The owners had a pig called Calvin Swine, hihi!

Magic Mississippi

Paducah, Kentucky, 10sep 2017
In English below

We passed St Louise on our way to Mississippi River. They have NO marinas whatsoever in the city!

We can really see in front of us how Tom Saywer and Huck are playing at the beautiful Mississippi beach edge, how they build a raft and let it slide slowly with the stream ... In the evening, they get off at one of the long sandy beaches and bbq the fish they fished from the raft , over open fire before falling asleep out of the excitement of the adventure and with a full belly .... I only have diffuse memories of the books, more feelings and must read about them now when we see what it looks like in reality :)

Certainly, the river has strong current (over 4kn with deep swirls that I would not take a canoe over, you must always be alert and divert for logs and tree branches and while the big barges are encountered, they are very friendly and tell us which side of the barge you should pass (one tut; pass to the right, two tut; pass left. We are also lucky with the weather with bright sunshine and weak winds! Believe me, Missisippi is a beautiful piece of wilderness, mile after mile down the river.

One night we were moored on a bunch of barges called Hoppies Marina. A toothless, chain-smocking oled lady owns the barges and lets us Loopers stay overnight. She has sailed on the rivers since ancient times (I believe it) and offers a lesson about "What to do and what not to do" during our trip on the river, down the Mississippi, Ohio and Cumberland Rivers.

We become a set of five boats that kept together; a couple in the 80's (!) who just started their loop, two boats from Canada, with a couple in each, Bill who started in Key Largo as we did, is  traveling alone in a small power boat and then us.

Another night we were tucked away in a small, small tributary, away from current and barges. Cozy! One morning we had super dense fog and the Canadian boat Eagle Hart, who had both radar and AIS, got the lead. He did that with honor and we passed the barges without any problems :)

Hoppies Marine Services and Fran giving oss river lectures :)

Early birds, we started at 7am...

..one hour later we headed strait into the fog!

...and out again :)

..with the barges after!

We anchored in a creek..

and had a beer or two.. in a spot...

..that looked like this on the sea chart!

She is a natural beauty... Mrs Mississippi

...but a bit turbulent at times :)

..and with quite a few other obstacles too!

Irma, now heading towards Crystal River (where Dale and Sandy are hiding!) and us (the blue spot on the map), but by then she has weakened to an ordinary low pressure!

Small towns along the rivers

Grafton and Alton, IL, 06sep 2017
In English below

Little Grafton is located in the mouth of the Great Mississippi River. We took a stop there and in little Alton in Mississippi River for after these stops we would be on the wild and hard-trafficed river, with only one marina to get in. We are warned! We are prepared!
In Grafton, there was a little Loopers meeting again, it was a while since. Here we celebrated Kent and Jan on "Follow that dream" who now crossed their wake and completed the entire Loop, they are now Goldloopers with that honor, cool!
Grafton was a small town with one street and a marina, that's it! The only interesting thing was a wood and carpentry shop that had interesting products, advocated by "retired veterans". Too bad they were too big to bring home.
In Alton we took the bikes to town and searched for human life. It was not easy to find. In a furniture store we saw some people and went in and had a nice chat with the owner (who refused to ship a rocking chair we would like to send to Sweden). In Alton, Lasse entered a weapon store (what's wrong ...) and there we saw a strange hunting trophy, see below and Blues Brothers ... here the time stands still!

 Alton...

...a local pottery and the owner had beard and called himself Hairy Potter, Hihi!

Someone in the pottery actually made this..... and probably thought it nice...

Easy does it

Grafton, Illinois, 05sep 2017
In English below

The Illinois River is really beautiful in its tranquil greenery. Calm waters, the lush trees and the sandy beaches that lines the river. We know that it can be quite rugged here with the river that can rise far beyond its widths, the few houses we have seen are built on stilts that look like fragile sticks and then a small house on top ...

Plenty of giant barges that take up the entire river. We constantly wonder how they can maneuver these great things! Lucky we are so small, so small and so far we've managed to pass! Then there may be a coal power station or a giant brewery (as in Preoria), or a small town that disappeares if you have been blinking. Sometimes we see a bunch of people at the river side who are having picnic. But mostly it's meditative greenery and a lot of birds. One day we saw white pelicans that flew in a straight line to the north (?) after taking a breathing pause just in front of us. At night we anchore in the mouths of small tributaries or behind islands and listen to the sounds of the night in the woods next to us - alone in the universe. We can absolutely understand life on the river.

BUT
Sandy and Dale, our friends in Key Largo, must gather their belongings, try to protect what can be protected and escape from the house in the superhurricane Irma's rampage. They had heard that the wind was measured at 90 m/s. It's almost triple hurricane strength! Now we hold our thumbs that she goes out at sea !!

Hmmmm

Lars just found the book he needs (he said)!
The book "Understanding Women" has finally arrived in book stores, he heard! When we came in to Grafton he just shut the engines and jumped ashore....

Starved rock state park

Ottawa, Illinois, 02sep 2017
In English below

Oh, something has happened ; last night it was only seven degrees, Brrr, the whole boat was like an icebox. A few hourS later it was 25 degrees ..... We have a new hate object; spiders! Lars just warned them at the beginning, now he does a spider massacre every morning. Apparently they lay eggs, it's "spider time" said a guy in the marina!! Autumn begins to appear, some branches of yellow leaves in the middle of the green .... Time to turn south :)

We ended up in a Very nice marina the night after our nightly adventure. We took the bikes and visited the cute city of Ottawa, which was about a mile south. There, in the marina, we also borrowed their "curtisy car" to providiot and visit Starved rock state park. Starved rock was simply a cliff over the river where the indian chief Pontiac's tribe chased the enemy tribe after they killed chief Pontiac in a bloody battle. The fiend Starved to death on Starved Rock! Later a fort was built on the cliff for protection from the Indians.

Life on the river

Ottwa, Illinois, 01sep 2017
In English below

We are "rookies" again, on channels. Now, it's a bit different with all those barges that are constantly in the way and have a headstep in the locks. Sometimes the entire load with barges and tugboat can not be ranched once, without the parts being taken, which takes an everlasting time. This partucular afternoon, we gad to wait Many hours together with three other boats. At first we had to tie up on a round, big pile (it was a project in itself) and wait. But we were not allowed to stay overnight so we locked in darkness and navigated into a marina. In our plotter the entrance to the marina was impossible to enter but the helpful staff led us in with the VHF -radio and flashlights. I can tell you that we slept well that night :)

It looks totally different at daytime :)

Illinois River

On the river, 31aug 2017
In English below

We left Chicago and beautiful Lake Michigan to continue the journey south with the Calumet River and Illinois River first, then in to the Great Mississippi River ... Believing that there will be a pastoral landscape, forget it! For one thing, there are big barges, big like a high rise house lying down ... It's okay as long as the river is straight, but in river bays it's, mildly out, exciting! We met a big barge in a curve and we missed the signal and got him on the wrong side ...... it could have been bad. I the little town Joliet, which we passed by today, one may not dock to  furthest of the pier due to that three boats were crushed there by a heavily loaded barge !!

We passed a very unusual lock yesterday. In order not to get into the "wrong fishing species" in the Great Lakes, they have invented an electric lock (do not put your feet in the water) which is half a mile of the river and where the fish can not cross and get to Lake Michigan and beyond. We saw, for example, big carp at the dam yesterday, they are strictly "personas non gratas"!

Well, today, the grass is a little greener and we see cornfields along the river :)
